Over the weekend, I traveled to Downtown Disney for an annual passholder preview of D Street, a new West End store featuring funky, modern clothing (think Tren-D from the other end of Downtown Disney). But at least half the store is oriented toward Vinylmation, the collectible Mickey Mouse forms that seems to be growing in popularity.

They’ve used the figures in creative way, including this signage inside. …

… or here, using tiny Vinyls to make a Mickey statue (oh, and under glass).

But there’s bonus, nonVinylmation things to see. The cast members on duty were quick to point out that some of the decor was transferred from the beloved Adventurers Club that was closed in the Great Pleasure Island Purge of 2008. See anything familiar below? (My recollection isn’t exact. See the Great Pleasure Island Purge of 2008.)

Back to the vinyl …

Vinylmation Jr. is a line of keychain-style collectibles. The figures are 1.5 inches tall.

I wouldn’t call these Hidden Mickeys, but Cloudy Mickeys on the ceiling of D Street.

These were the hidden gems to me. Pics of Vinylmation figures with appropriate backgrounds from Walt Disney World property. Here’s a dalmatian with a hydrant at Magic Kingdom’s Main Street and the Mine-Mine one outside The Seas with Nemo and Friends at Epcot.

Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant

in Downtown Disney’s West End was constructed in Ireland from old bars then dismantled and shipped to Florida. The menu was crafted by chef Kevin Dundon of Dunbrody House in Ireland. The pub gets its name from a Patrick Kavanagh’s poem, which was originally published under the title “Dark Haired Myriam Ran Away.” The portobello beauty is a popular item from the lunch menu and a great way to get in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.

Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant’s Portobello Beauty

Yield: 1 serving.

1 portobello mushroom, gills scraped

1 kaiser-style bun with caramelized onions baked on top, split

Olive oil for glazing

1 ounce Dubliner cheese (about 1 slice, see note)

Tomato chutney to taste (see note)

1. Grill mushroom until cooked through. In saute pan, briefly cook mushroom in oil to glaze.

2. Place slice of cheese on mushroom cap and place under broiler to melt cheese.

3. Serve on bun with chutney.

Recipe note: Dubliner cheese is sold at Publix.

How to make the tomato chutney: This is the 3-gallon yield from the restaurant. In a large square roasting pan, combine 14 pounds diced plum tomatoes, 4 peeled and chopped red onions, 1 pound brown sugar, 1 quart good-quality balsamic vinegar, 1 pound raisins and 1/4 cup blend of salt and pepper or to taste. Bring to a boil and cook until tomatoes are soft, but still bright red. Remove from pan and chill. Simmer until cooking liquid is reduced in volume by half. Chill again. Recipe can be cut to 1/3 with good results.

There’s a chance Monday night to relive some memories of the late, lamented Comedy Warehouse and Adventurers Club while lending a helping hand to someone in need.

Disney shuttered the Comedy Warehouse and the Adventurers Club last fall when it pulled the plug on all the dance and comedy clubs at its Downtown Disney Pleasure Island complex.

Monday, Disney performers and others are staging a night of remembrance for their late colleague Bruce Bowes. Bruce was a sound technician; his work can be heard in the Shakespeare Center’s current production of Yankee Tavern.

To help Bruce’s wife Joy cover expenses, a bunch of Bruce’s super-talented friends and co-workers are staging their remembrance as a benefit show. Tickets are $15.

Among the various music, dane and compedy acts scheduled to perform is a cappella group Toxic Audio, who played at the the Pleasure Island Jazz Club back in the day.

Also on the bill are Hoopla favorites from the A.C., and skits a la Comedy Warehouse. Among the familiar faces involved: Krista Miller and Mary Thompson Hunt.

Also on hand as part of the evening: a silent auction. Word on the street is there will be Adventurers Club paraphernalia up for bids, including a genuine Hathaway Brown oversized martini glass. (But will it be as oversized as his ego?)

Tickets, as I said, are $15 for the event, which takes place in the Margeson Theater at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 E. Rollins St., Orlando. The silent auction (and cocktail hour) begins at 7 p.m.; the show is at 8.

For more information, call 407-252-8830.

Our condolences to Joy on her loss. It sounds like this show will be a fitting tribute to a man who made his mark on our local entertainment scene.
