Changes at Pleasure Island won’t be finished until 2012

Walt Disney World hasn’t said much about it plans for Pleasure Island since closing its six nightclubs more than two years one year ago, but whatever changes are in store apparently won’t be finished until 2012.

That timeframe is tucked inside the Walt Disney Co.’s 107-page annual financial report, which was filed earlier this month with federal regulators.

In a section describing Disney World’s holdings, Disney writes,” In September 2008, the company commenced a plan to enhance Pleasure Island, which will feature new shopping and dining experiences to entertain guests of all ages. The project is expected to be completed in 2012.”

Pleasure Island’s six nightclubs closed Sept. 27, 2008. Disney has said it wants to make the venue more appealing to all age groups — rather than only those of legal drinking age.

But since the closings, only one new venue has opened at Pleasure Island:  Paradiso 37, a restaurant with Mexican and South American cuisine. Disney has, however, added some other new elements elsewhere around Downtown Disney, including the Characters in Flight tethered-balloon ride and the dinosaur-themed restaurant T-Rex.

Sept. 27, 2008 was not “more than 2 years ago.” Its basic math, really.

lol. I guess it wasn’t in the budget to keep the proof reading department around.

When they announced that PI clubs were closing, the official announcement said changes were going to occur over 2 years. We are now well-beyond 1 year yet NO changes have taken place on Pleasure Island in any of the 7 former comedy or dance club buildings.

Now they are saying changes will be completed by 2012 which means it took 4 years! But they can’t tell you what even 1 change is going to be let alone 7 changes. Because quite likely, Disney doesn’t even know what they’re going to do with the place.

What a shame, Pleasure Island was such a cool and innovative place when it opened. Seems like it just one blunder after another, should have never been closed let alone run into the ground. Citywalk and Downtown are laughing all the way to the bank while Pleasure Island and its business’s sit empty. I would hate to be a business owner on Pleasure Island, it would be hard enough to make a profit with the economy the way it is not to mention all the empty buildings.

Change what you want but bring back the Adventurers Club and the Comedy Club

WHAT a JOKE! An entire area turned from entertainment, to shopping and selling dining slots to franchises, when the 4 ‘theme…err…sales parks’ already exist. PI was a hip place!! It’s like a construction zone of nothingness now between shopping zones. Am sure will become an uninspiring area of sales points, with little to no entertainment value. Adventures club was amazing. Current day Disney couldn’t come up with that…a shame really. VERY disapponted in Disney overall except for them buying Pixar, which I fear they’ll wreck.

There is also a new store that sells nothing but socks on the AMC side. A great addition that should attract huge crowds.

8 Trax was the best place in Orlando. We haven’t been back to DD since it closed nor do we have any interest in going back. Way to lose good business.

I am still disgusted about them closing PI. Disney is slowly shutting out the adult side of “all ages” and catering to young kids and families. PI was a great, safe place to go out and enjoy an adult beverage and have a great choice of entertainment. City Walk does not compare as the crowd is much rougher and security is not as good (my opinion). Family friendly means more stores and restaurants, but nothing for adults. I do not know why adults bother to come to Disney anymore unless they have kids. Except for a few events like Food and Wine, it is heavy on the family friendly. PI was great because you could come down and let loose in a safe envoironment. I keep hoping they will reconsider and open a few clubs along with the shops and restaurants, but family friendly seems to be the theme, which would, of course, exclude the adult portion of the population.

I agree entirely. Disney seems to have forgotten why Walt created Disneyland. A place where kids AND adults could have fun together. 20,000 Leagues replaced with a kids playground, PI closed, parades that are more about getting kids dancing around than spectacle, has anyone been in to a Disney Store lately and tried to get an adult tee, or anything else for adults for that matter.
I love Disney and travel with my wife (no kids) to WDW from the UK as often as we can, but this move away from adult-inclusive stuff gets me down.

  • Bob says:

What a dumb decision… “Let’s close all the PI clubs and not have any replacements businesses lined up” Maybe they should have signed some contracts first. Go to a 3 day operation if it alledgedly wasn’t profitable. The morons running the place got greedy, and assumed they could make more money if they further outsourced Downtown Disney and turn it into an even more crappy shopping mall.
    What a waste.

  • Dani says:

I believe closing PL was more of a safety issue involving Disney guests. It was a great decision on the upper management’s part.

  • Pixar Fam says:

Dani, not to be cynacal, but Disney couldn’t give 2 cents about your or your family’s safety, until that second it hits their pocket book over the cost to protect their image (not you). Was well documented the very little safety issues, but was closed as ‘not lucritive ENOUGH for Disney’ and that all that space is up for subleasing. Restaurants and stores. Any new attractions (balloon) are to be pay per use. Its a mess over there. Any local strip mall is nicer. And has much better stores and food to boot. I wish none of this were so. Disney parks are the epitome of poor management being greedy, loosing touch. There is little in Disney improved over the last 20 years from a guest experience point of view.

  • Alibaba says:

Disney pulled one over on the people that were going to sublease in there. My boss was going to put in a custom made balloon store (I know, silly to some). Paradiso (the only establishment to stay the plan) is owned by owner of Marekkesh in Epcot and got special deal.

Disney was horrible to deal with as a landlord, my boss pulled out. No custom balloons. Looks like a graveyard walking from one crappy area of Downtown Disney to the other. As live in Celebration, I took my parents there, and later to bad dinner at Polynesian, and was embarassed I wasted their time, and my money.
