More details are emerging about the revamped Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom park. The coaster, remarkably the oldest one operating in Florida, has been closed since spring, and Disney World says it will be open to guests again as of Nov. 22. (As always, keep an eye out for news of soft opening in the coming days.)

Among the factoids appearing today on the official Disney Parks blog:

+ Riders will be able to have photo taken during the trip via the Disney Photopass. Disney has updated their post to say it will not be on the Photopass system

+ New color scheme for the ride’s capsules, line and load areas (paint, carpet, seat fabric and such).

+ New technology in the track but preserving the previous feel of the coaster. Not a lot of explanation there.

+ Imagineer Alex Wright thinks folks will be “pleasantly surprised” by the enhancements. Let’s hope that’s in the Haunted Mansion pleasantly surprised way. Actually, real news would be if the Imagineer said the changes were unpleasantly surprising. We kid, we kid.

Unfortunately Disney has now corrected its blog – Space Mountain will NOT now be on the Photopass system.

We tried the new Space Mountain tonight Nov. 16th,2009 around 6PM. There was a 45 minute wait. The line was a challenge. The a/c was not working and there was more then a few people coughing. They have placed these arcade style machines in the first hallway and did this ever interupt line movement.Once you get to the back room the line weaves badly at least 5 levels deep. The last row mysteriously goes behind a wall that was so warm the lady ahead of us almost fainted. The loading area is wide and spacious with plenty of room for a singles line but they had none in spite of many of the trains having one and even two empty seats.Once on the ride the new seats are much wider and heavily padded. The ride seems to be much faster and well worth the wait. The only thing i noticed was that moving faster also meant you head was shaken a lot more. There are many advance warning signs but this time it is truly a rough ride not suitable for anyone prone to suffering after being shaken a lot.

It’s a shame that Disney made Space Mountain a rougher ride. The Magic Kingdom was always known for coasters that were fun and thrilling, yet gentle enough that most people, both young and old, could enjoy them.

All the reviews I have read so far say it’s exactly the same as it was before. It was always rough, perhaps you rode a different side last time? It was not made any faster. They barely touched the ride itself.
