Getting the (exclamation) point: Attraction titles with punch, not a period
Dewayne Bevil, Featured, Park Tips — By Dewayne Bevil on November 12, 2009 at 4:16 pmOK, I may have some exclamation point issues. If you’ve ever received an e-mail from me, there’s probably been at least one exclamation point to add flourish to a sentence.
In formal writing — and even blogging — I try to avoid them because it seems a bit sloppy and unprofessional. But sometimes they slip in! Don’t judge me!
Was mulling this piece of punctuation while watching the new “Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee!” at the Magic Kingdom. It would be hard to argue that the show doesn’t deserve a ! with all that high energy and tambourine banging.
And yet, I imagine there were high-level meetings about whether to give the title an enthusiastic ending.
Exciting stuff, right? But which of our theme parks is the most exclamation heavy? Stay tuned!
According to my calculations (and the official guide maps), Disney’s Hollywood Studios has the most exclamation points in the names of its attractions: seven points over six attractions. They are Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!; Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show; Toy Story Midway Mania!; Playhouse Disney — Live on Stage!; Fantasmic! and the double-dipping High School Musical 3: Senior Year — Right Here! Right Now!
Magic Kingdom has three now: Jubilee! plus Stitch’s Great Escape! and Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party. Epcot’s three are Imagination! O Canada! and Don’t Waste It! (in Innoventions)
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is slightly more sedate with two: Habitat Habit! and It’s Tough to be a Bug!
Our other parks are not as worked up. SeaWorld Orlando sports only Pets Ahoy! Universal Studios features Animal Actors on Location! and Disaster! I’m assuming that Islands of Adventuress sole exclamation point attraction is meant as sarcastic: The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride!
Seriously!
But maybe they’re onto something. Exclamation points add punch and excitement. So may I suggest: “Country Bears Jamboree!”?
