If you have elementary school-age kids, it’s a safe bet that you’ve heard of Flat Stanley and his global adventures. Many years ago, my niece in Texas sent her Flat Stanley to us with a request that he visit the Magic Kingdom and be photographed in front of Cinderella Castle. We felt a little silly posing with Stanley, but we snapped the shot and showed Stanley our Disney favorites. Something told me he wasn’t a first-time visitor that day, but he humored us anyway.
Socialstudiesforkids.com describes the popular educational project this way: “Flat Stanley is the title character of a series of books written by Jeff Brown. Stanley Lambchop is a normal boy who finds himself flattened by a bulletin board, but that doesn’t stop his adventures. He is sent through the mail to places all around the world, where friends and family take him on trips, see sights, and increase the knowledge of the world of not only Stanley but also anyone reading the book.“
Last month the first three Stanley books were inducted into the Library of Congress, and Adventures by Disney and HarperCollins Children’s Books announced the contest, The Search For Flat Stanley’s Next Big Adventure. Children ages 7 to 12 can win an Adventures by Disney vacation by creating a themed Flat Stanley and a 150-word story about his next big adventure. Entries will be judged in three age groups: 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. Official rules and entry forms can be found here. Deadline to enter is Nov. 30.
