Good news for annual passholders: Disney has extended the 3-month-free renewal deal.

When I first heard about the three free months for renewing Disney annual passholders, I was elated. Then when I heard that the deal would end Dec. 31, I was discouraged: My pass doesn’t need renewing until March. Then when I asked Disney if I could pay for my pass early to take advantage of the deal — and they said they didn’t want my money early! — I was furious.

How can a special passholder be available only to passholders whose passes expire at a certain time? What kind of fairness is that?

But apparently, Disney has seen the light. If you’ve been to the annual-pass site lately, you’ll notice the main welcome message now states the three-months-free deal is valid until Aug. 31, 2010. When you renew your pass before then and pay for the usual 12 months, you will actually get 15 months of admission. (Note this is not applicable to the Epcot after-4 pass).

There still seems to be some mixed messages out there. My latest issue of AAA’s “Going Places” magazine arrived with a full-page back-cover ad still noting the December date, but I’m sure that magazine went to press weeks ago.

More curious: Certain places on the Disney Web site still tout the Dec. 31 date, but I am trusting the passholder site. Letting all passholders take advantage of this deal is not only a smart move by Disney, it’s the only fair thing to do.

UPDATE:

Well, the date confusion has been cleared up, and it all makes sense to me now. My head must have been lost in a cloud of pixie dust. The date discrepancy depends on whether you are renewing your annual pass, or buying a new one.

n If you are a current passholder, you can take advantage of the deal by renewing your pass at the appropriate time between now and Aug. 31, 2010.

n If you don’t currently have a Disney annual pass and want to get one to take advantage of the discount, you must purchase your new pass by Dec. 31, 2009.

Do DVC discounted Annual Passes also get the extended expiration date?

  • Char says:

does it have to be activated by Dec.31…we will be activating our (already purchased vouchers) on Jan. 30.

I just called WDW-INFO and was told the purchase date (for new passes) is 12/31/2009, and the latest activation date is 1/14/2010.

I emailed passholder services a couple of weeks ago about this very thing. The guest relations cast member at Epcot I previously asked about the date discrepancy (my pass renews Feb. 3) said “sometimes you catch the sale.” His “oh, well – you’re out of luck” response is what prompted me to inquire. I received an email back from Debbie Grant this past weekend stating what Matt shows above. I had a feeling they would realize they weren’t being fair to all passholders. I applaud WDW for stepping up and doing the right thing!

So is the annual pass discount only apply to Florida residents or can anyone purchase an AP and get the 15 month deal?

  • Barbara says:

If purchased before 12/31 but not activated until later in the year, would I still get the 15 months?
I plan to get an AP but we are not traveling until May. Would my AP be good till August 2011?
