A Mom and The Mouse: Dishing on Disney

My little Mickey and Minnie have been going to Walt Disney World since they were babies. Photo by Kristin Ford.

My friends affectionately call me a “Disney fanatic.” I blame my parents for that because my love of Walt Disney World began when our family visited the Magic Kingdom and River Country for three consecutive summers when I was growing up in the 70s. (Can you believe they allowed two grade-school girls to wander through MK on their own?!) I made a few trips to the parks over the years before moving to Orlando 15 years ago for my career here at the Sentinel. One of the first things I did when I got into town, of course, was go to Disney World.

My desire to spend time in the parks has not diminished over time. In fact, it only grew after the births of my two children, now ages 5 and 7. The promise of creating the same lasting memories for my son and daughter and reliving my childhood favorites is strong. My husband is willing, most of the time, to indulge my love of all things Disney, even if he doesn’t believe in the magic so readily.

On this blog, I’ll tell you about our adventures – and misadventures – in the parks, and the many other ways the Disney magic permeates our lives and wallets. I’ll try to answer your questions and learn from your experiences. And I hope my anecdotal insights will help you make your own Disney memories a little brighter.

DEAR KRISTIN OR A MOM AND THE MOUSE, I MYSELF AM ALSO A DISNY FANATIC BUT HAVE NEVER STAYED ON DISNEY PROPERTY. THIS YEAR I WOULD LIKE TOO, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO STAY IN A 1BR VILLA. WE HAVE A 31/2 YR OLD AND A 61/2 YR OLD. I LIKE THE BOARDWALK VILLAS. WE ALREADY HAVE OUR TICKETS WE HAD BOUGHT IN THE PAST, SO WE JUST NEED THE ROOM. IS THERE ANYWAY TO GET A DEAL ON THE ROOM. THE PRICES ARE SO HIGH. WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO GO IN THE SPRING WITH CROWDS, BUT NICE ENOUGH WEATHER TO GO SWIMMING? WE ARE FROM PA AND WANT TO BE WARM, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, HA HA. THANKS SO MUCH.

Debbie: The rates and discounts on rooms change often, so a reliable Web site to bookmark and check is http://www.mousesavers.com. As for the weather question, I would recommend visiting Disney World in May. You will miss the Spring Break-Easter crowds and beat the summer crowds. Thanks for reading!

    Dear Kristin,
Thanks for the updates! Your Prep & Landing was the only place I saw that validated that it WAS supposed to air tonight. . . My DD was all set to watch with her elves- thank you! Keep up the good work!

    Hi Kristin,
I just wanted to tell you I have enjoyed reading your blogs. I love everything Disney. The reason I really enjoy it now is my daughter is down there and enrolled in the College Intern Program. We miss her but this has been a great experience for her. I feel a little closer to her by reading your blogs. They are also very helpful. She will get to come home for a mini break next week for Easter which I am really excited about. Yesterday I read your blog about the outlet stores. I sent her a text right away. She went over after work and called all excited with what she had found. So thank you for the great job you are doing. I will continue to read them and will enjoy all the new info you will provide.
